Anne and Mary visit West Frankfort

Jenna Eubanks
On November 13, 2007 I took Anne and Mary to West Frankfort, IL (37.90 N Latitude and 88.92 W Longitude) to the Coal Miner's Memorial, located at 100 E. Main. The memorial is dedicated to all Southern Illinois coal miners who lost their lives doing their jobs. In particular, this historical site recognizes the 119 miners who lost their lives on December 21, 1951 in the New Orient No. 2 Mine. Although it was fun traveling with Anne and Mary, thinking about this tragedy made me a little sad. But overall, Anne, Mary, and myself traveled 27.15 miles to West Frankfort and 27.15 back to SIU. For a total of 54.30 miles with me and a grand total of 5223.16 miles.

This week, I was thinking back to the fun time we had on the Ohio River in Elizabethtown. The four of us had so much fun while on the business trip. We had fun in the cabin that is owned by the Franks, even though we were threatened by the looming elk hanging on the wall. I thought I might have heard whispers of dogs in mouths, but that may not have been the case. We had so much fun that time. We love remembering the travels of the past and anticipate the travels of our future!

It was 73 miles to Elizabethtown and 73 miles back to Carbondale. That makes for 146 total miles traveled by Anne and Mary on this trip. The the latitude and longitude coordinates for this location are 37.47N - 88.32W. We have traveled over 4,000 miles this past semester! It is so exciting!

Veterans Memorial Plaza

On November 11, 2007, Mary, Anne, and I traveled to the Veterans Memorial Plaza in Carbondale. It was exciting to see a historic place that was only 1.17 miles away! We drove to the town square where the plaza is located. It was built in 1998 by the Carbondale VFW to commemorate local soldiers that passed away in 20th Century wars. Mary, Anne, and I were very intrigued by the lighted wall that was built in 2003. It identified the plaza, but it was the plaques behind the wall that were the most interesting. Each one described one of the 20th Century wars and the losses that befell the United States. After reading some very interesting information on the plaques, we also realized that Carbondale holds the Veterans Day celebrations at the plaza. We decided that we would have to visit tomorrow for Veterans Day! The latitude is 37.727N and the longitude is -89.216W. We piled back into the car and drove the 1.17 miles back home reflecting on all the interesting information we learned. Mary and Anne have now traveled 4,171.2 miles!

Mary and Anne's visit to Fort Defiance

On Novemeber 23, 2007, Mary, Anne, and I traveled to Fort Defiance, in Defiance, Ohio after a long morning of Christmas shopping. We were tired after traveling 435.29 miles to get to this destination from Carbondale. This landmark is located -84.355 degrees longitude and 41.284 degrees latitude. We thought this was an important site to visit while visiting my home town. Anthony Wayne had the fort built in 1794 during his campaign against Ohio Native Americans to provide his men protection and as a staging ground for future operations. The fort was a rough square with a blockhouse located on each corner. After the Battle of Fallen Timbers, Wayne ordered the destruction of all Native American villages and crops within a fifty-mile radius of the fort. With the signing of the Treaty of Greeneville in 1795, the natives permitted the Americans to maintain a trading post and fort at Fort Defiance. Until the War of 1812, Fort Defiance helped protect local citizens from native attacks. We had fun reading about this important landmark, playing on the cannons, and enjoyed the beautiful scenery around the Maumee and Auglaize Rivers. After our visit, we piled back into my car and traveled back to Carbondale. Mary and Anne have now traveled 4,168.86 miles.

On Tuesday, November 6, 2007, Mary, Anne, and I traveled to Jonesboro, Illinois. We traveled 22.1 miles to the Lincoln Memorial Picnic grounds. This park is part of the Shawnee National Forest. The park is the sight of the third series of senate debates between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas. In the park there is a monument where Mary, Anne, and I got our picture taken. Besides the monument, the park has picnic shelters, a gazebo, and a pond. The park is used by a lot of locals for recreation. There are a few walking trails and with the beauty of the park it makes for an enjoyable exercise. The park is located -89.268 longitude and 37.455 latitude. Once we took a few laps around the pond, we loaded up the car to return back home. On our way out of the park, I realized I had a flat tire. We waited on my father and while we waited we played on the playground equipment. Once the tire had been changed, we piled back into the car and traveled the 22.1 miles back to Carbondale. Mary and Anne have now traveled a total of 3298.28 miles.

Anne, Mary, Sarah, and I visited Elizabethtown, IL. We were on business with InterVarsity Christian Fellowship for our semester planning retreat and Anne and Mary were able to accompany us. We had a great time as did Anne and Mary, although they were a little scarred by the elk on the wall at the cabin!

Elizabethtown is a small and quaint town that has a lot of historical sites and interesting places to visit. We visited the Ohio River Ferry, Floating Catfish Restaurant, and the hunting cabin of a very prominent businessman. This picture here is all four of us at one of the River Taxi stops. Mary and Anne visit Giant City State Park

On October 21st, 2007 Mary and Anne joined me on a trip to Giant City State Park in Makanda, Illinois. We hopped in my car and drove approximately 16 minutes to the beautiful State Park. Giant City is just south of Carbondale and is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. Giant City was formed 12,000 years ago by large bluffs of sandstone. There are many different activities to do while there. They are: hiking, camping, picnicking, hunting, fishing, rock climbing and rappelling, horseback riding, lodging and dining. On our adventure we hiked along 3 different trails. The trees are turning colors of red, orange, and yellow making for a beautiful scene and the weather was just perfect for hiking! Or total millage traveled was 19.16 miles, making Anne and Mary's current miles traveled 2,942.5! The Latitude for Giant City is 37.617N and the Longitude is -89.208W.

Sunday, October 14, 2007

On Saturday, October 13th, Kelli took Anne and Mary to Peoria, IL. We visited Bradley University, but more specifically the monument of Christopher Columbus. This monument shows Christopher Columbus holding a globe in his left hand and calipers in his right hand. The statue was donated on October 15, 1902. The statue is nine feet tall and sits on a twenty-two foot high pedestal, weighing 78 tons. There were four other statues made from the same mold which are located in Columbus, Ohio; New Haven, Connecticut; Phillipsburg, New Jersey; and Chicago, Illinois. Time, weather, and vandalism all contributed to the deterioration of this statue. In the 1970’s it was placed in storage. The statue was restored in the early 1980’s and was rededicated in 1984 on Columbus Day. The latitude coordinates are 40° 41' 53" and the longitude coordinates are -89° 37' 1". The NEW total miles that Anne and Mary have traveled is 2890.94 miles!!!

Mary and Anne visit the Veterans Living Memorial

Mary and Anne take a trip to the Veterans Living Memorial with Julie LaMar

Mary and Anne traveled 35.8 miles round trip to the VFW in Marion, IL., which is where the Veterans Living Memorial is located. The Longitude and Latitude coordinates for this particular location are: longitude -88.92840385437012/latitude 37.755244134885736

Mary and Anne sitting on the memorial stone at the Veterans Living Memorial. My father's name is on this memorial so both Marion and Anne got to see where he served and with whom he served. This monument means a lot to me not only because my father's name is on it, but also that it is a wonderful reminder of the men who served our country.

There is a real tank on the lot at the VFW, so Mary and Anne decided they would like their picture taken while sitting on the tank. There was a pretty good wind blowing that day and I didn't have anyone with me to take my picture, but in this picture you can see my hair blowing in front of the camera. Great photographer, huh.

Here is a close up of Mary and Anne sitting on the actual Veterans Living memorial. They enjoyed their visit to the memorial and would have liked to have stayed but the wind was a really blowing and I was afraid they might get blown away, so we packed up our backpack and headed to SIU for our Social Studies class.

Anne and Mary go to Jail!

On September 9, 2007 Anne, Mary, and I went to the Old Franklin County Jail in Benton Illinois. This mansion and adjoining jail has been restored to its original 1905 condition. The exhibits include:

•Old radio equipment from station WFRX that was used when the Beatles’ George Harrison visited the area in 1963, and the station played the first Beatle record in the U.S., “From Me to You.”
•Memorabilia from Prohibition, gangs, and Charlie Birger in the 1920’s.
•A room dedicated to high school, college, and professional basketball standout Doug Collins, who spent his childhood in the area and lived in the mansion while his father was sheriff. His one-time bedroom has been converted into a room dedicated to his basketball career.
•Civil War Memorabilia and John A. Logan historical items and local history items.
•A 17-foot monument to General Logan and the 209 Union Soldiers from Franklin County who died to preserve the nation.

As mentioned earlier, the jail became a symbol for the gang era in Southern Illinois during Prohibition, and became the last stop for Charlie Birger, the last man publicly hanged in Illinois on April 19, 1928 for the murder of West City’s mayor, Joe Adams.

All together, Anne, Mary, and I traveled 67.92 miles. We rode in my SUV. The latitude coordinate of the Old Franklin County Jail is 88.7 degrees North, and the longitude coordinate is 38 degrees West.
